Strength and Hardness of Metal Gaskets of Flanges

In order to be resistant to corrosion in the atmosphere, if the flange is in an industrial atmosphere or a heavily polluted area, it needs to be cleaned in time to avoid corrosion. Stainless steel flanges are suitable for food processing, storage and transportation. In high-pressure equipment and pipelines, metal gaskets of lens types or other shapes made from copper, aluminum, No.10 steel, and stainless steel are used.

Stainless steel flanges show important performance and value in specific application areas. They are generally suitable for occasions where the temperature is lower than 120℃; for pressure lower than 5MPa, the acid-resistant asbestos board is commonly used for general corrosive media. The contact width between the high-pressure gasket and sealing surface is very narrow (line contact), and the processing degree of finish of the sealing surface and gasket is relatively high.

Austenite steel plates have the best comprehensive performance. They have not only sufficient strength but also excellent plasticity. At the same time, they don't have good hardness. This is one of the reasons why they are widely used. The pneumatic actuator is a circular ring made of a material that can produce plastic deformation and has a certain strength.

Most gaskets of the valve pressure tester are cut from non-metallic plates or made by professional factories according to the specified size. The materials are asbestos rubber plates, asbestos plates, polyethylene plates, etc. There is also a spiral wound gasket made by winding the thin steel tape and asbestos tape. Flanges with different pressures are provided with bolts of different thicknesses and use.

A flange is usually a connecting part that uses bolts to connect two planes at the periphery, but this connection is only a part of the equipment. However, the connection between the flange and the water pump can not be referred to as flange parts. Austenitic stainless steel is similar to most other metal materials. Its tensile strength, yield strength and hardness increase with the decrease of temperature; the plasticity decreases with the decrease of temperature.

There are also metal-clad gaskets made of non-metallic materials such as asbestos wrapped in thin metal plates (white iron and stainless steel) for pneumatic valves.
