A Brief Introduction to Butt Welding Flanges

A butt welding flange is a kind of pipe fitting, which connects to the pipe. A butt welding flange is not easy to deform, has good sealing performance and wide applications. It is suitable for pipelines with large fluctuations in pressure or temperature as well as high-temperature, high-pressure and low-temperature pipelines. The nominal pressure of a butt welding flange is not higher than 2.5MPa. The price of a butt welding flange is relatively cheap. It is also used for pipelines with expensive, flammable and explosive media, whose nominal pressure is around PN16MPa.
 
There are two manufacturing processes for butt welding flanges. The first is die forging, that is, the steel material is heated to 1200℃ in a heating furnace, and then it is put to a mold with corresponding specifications. The second is free forging. The material is heated to 1200℃ in a heating furnace, and then forge the square material into a round shape; use special equipment to expand the punched material to the required size.
 
The correct installation sequence for butt welding flanges
A butt welding flange is a connecting device for two large-diameter pipelines. Usually, two flanges plus a number of fastening bolts are adopted. A butt welding flange has good plasticity and low strength, and it will become hard after adding a proper amount of carbon.

The correct installation sequence for butt welding flanges are as follows:
1. Before connecting the butt welding flanges, the inner and outer sides of the stainless steel pipe fittings should be cleaned.
2. Install the raised part of flanges on the pipes that need to be connected.
3. The end of the pipe needs to be processed with a 90-degree flanging process. After the treatment, the end face of the pipe needs to be polished. After polishing, it should be vertical and flat; there should be no burrs, concave-convex parts and deformation, and the pipe end needs to be rounded with a special tool .
4. Another simple method is that a finished product is processed by flanging, and then it was welded to the pipe. 
5. Embed the O shaped rubber sealing ring and stainless steel sealing ring on both sides in raised parts of flanges. The inner hole of the sealing ring is the same as the inner diameter of the pipe.
6. Then put the bolts in the the flange holes, and the bolts need to be tightened symmetrically.
7. When tightening the butt welding flange, we should pay attention to making tightness of connecting parts meet the required specifications.
 
When we install a butt welding flange, we can install it in accordance with the above installation sequence. It's necessary to install a butt welding flange based on the correct installation sequence.
